Overview
Folk Game Hall is a collection of traditional board games rebuilt for the web. Many of these games were once drawn in chalk on a pavement or scratched into the dirt and played with pebbles; they are easy to forget because they were rarely printed or sold. The hall keeps them playable, with clear rules and a board that enforces legal moves for you.
At the time of writing the hall offers eight playable games: Cannons and Soldiers, Watermelon Chess, Tiger and Goats, Jungle (Dou Shou Qi), Sanxie, Gomoku, Go, and a Sliding Number Puzzle. Several more, including Three Men Morris, Trapped Ox, Chinese Checkers and Huarong Dao, are listed as coming later.
Each two-player game can be played against a computer opponent or by two people sharing one device, and most also support friend rooms where you send an invite link or a six-character room code so a friend can join from another device. Built-in tutorials and move hints explain the rules as you play, which makes the hall a gentle way to learn a game you have only heard about.
The site is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Rules follow common folk versions; where local variants differ, the game pages say which version is used.
Key features
Eight playable traditional games
Asymmetric hunt games (Cannons and Soldiers, Tiger and Goats), surround-to-capture games (Watermelon Chess), pattern-capture games (Sanxie), animal chess (Jungle), connection games (Gomoku), Go on board sizes from 5×5 to 19×19, and a solo sliding puzzle with numbers or public-domain paintings.
Computer opponents with difficulty levels
The hunt and pattern games offer several AI levels, from a beginner that looks only a move ahead to a strong opponent that searches deeper. Go uses the GNU Go engine on every board size.
Local two-player and friend rooms
Play side by side on one screen, or create a friend room, copy the invite link and play remotely. Rooms can be set to no timer or 60 seconds per move, and players can request a side swap before the first move.
Rules that teach themselves
Legal destinations are highlighted, illegal moves are refused with an explanation, and coach-style hints describe what to do next. For Jungle, for example, the coach explains that rats can enter water and that lions and tigers can jump rivers unless a rat blocks the path.
Clearly stated rule versions
Folk games vary from village to village. The hall states the version it uses: Gomoku is played on a 15×15 board without Renju forbidden moves, Go uses Chinese area scoring with size-adjusted komi, and Sanxie uses a stated quick-play capture scale.
How to use Folk Game Hall
- Open the Folk Game Hall and choose a game from the directory. Each card shows whether the game is for two players, AI play or solo.
- Read the short rules panel or start the tutorial if the game is new to you.
- Choose your side (for example Tigers or Goats, Cannons or Soldiers) and pick an AI difficulty, or select two-player mode to play on one device.
- To play with a friend elsewhere, create a friend room, choose a time rule and share the invite link or room code.
- Make moves by selecting a piece and tapping a highlighted point. Follow the hint line if you are unsure what the game expects next.
- When the game ends, review the final position, then swap sides and play again. Asymmetric games feel very different from each side.
Who it’s for
- Players curious about traditional Chinese and Asian folk games that are hard to find in shops.
- Parents and grandparents who want to share games from their own childhood with children.
- Teachers looking for short strategy games that need no equipment and teach planning.
- Beginners who want to learn Go or Gomoku on small boards before moving to full size.
- Friends who want a quick online match without installing an app.
FAQ
- Which games can I play right now?
- Cannons and Soldiers, Watermelon Chess, Tiger and Goats, Jungle, Sanxie, Gomoku, Go and the Sliding Number Puzzle are playable. Other games appear in the directory as coming later.
- Do I need an account to play?
- No account is needed to play against the AI or with a friend on the same device. Friend rooms work by sharing an invite link or room code.
- Why do the rules differ from the ones I learned?
- Most of these games were passed on by word of mouth, so local versions differ in board shape, piece counts and win conditions. The hall uses common versions and states them on each game page.
- How strong is the AI?
- It depends on the level you choose. The lowest level makes loose moves on purpose so new players can win; the highest levels search much further and make few tactical mistakes.
- Can I play on a phone?
- Yes. The hall runs in a mobile or desktop browser and supports tapping as well as clicking.
